Central Asia only gets crumbs of China’s investment pie

China may have emerged as Central Asia’s dominant trade partner in recent years, but the region has been an afterthought for Beijing when it comes to foreign investment. While China invested more than $2.6 trillion worldwide over the two decades spanning 2005-2025, the five Central Asian states – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan – accounted for only a 3 percent share, or about $89.3 billion, according to the latest China Global Investment Tracker published by the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation.
